1.出身/About Me

皆さん、こんにちは！アイルランドから来ました、スティーブン・ムーアと申します。私は、愛媛県に新しく着任した英語圏のCIRです。アイルランドでは、ビールをはじめとする料理や飲み物が有名な、アイルランド南部に位置する「コーク」という小さな都市で生まれ育ちました。アイルランドは小さくて、農業が盛んな島国ですので、子供の頃に友達と一緒に畑で遊んだり、海岸沿いを歩いたりして、よく時間を過ごしました。山林をハイキングしながら、まだ知らない場所を見つけるのがとても好きです。けれど、これまでの人生でよく旅行し、様々な国を「家」と呼べるような素晴らしい機会も経験してきました。例えば、2025年7月までロンドンに住んでいて、その前には京都市に住でいました！英語、スペイン語、日本語などができますので、話しましょう！

Hi everyone! My name is Stephen Moore and I am the English speaking CIR for Ehime prefecture. I was born and raised in a small city in the south of Ireland called Cork which is known for its food and drink, specifically beer. As Ireland is a small, agricultural island nation I spent a lot of my childhood playing with my friends on farms and walking on the beach. I really love hiking through forests and mountains discovering new places. However, I've had the fantastic opportunity to travel a lot and call a few different countries my home. For example, until August 2025 I was living in London and before that I lived in Kyoto city! I speak English, Japanese and Spanish, so let's talk!

 

2.日本に来ようと思った理由・日本に興味を持った理由/Reason for being interested in Japan

実は、私が日本に来た理由は少し珍しいかもしれません。大学に入学した際には、具体的なきっかけがあったわけではなく、日本語を勉強することにしました。なぜなら、高校生の時にスペイン語を勉強するのが好きでしたが、６年間勉強するうちに、飽きてしまいました。高校時代を通して、獣医になりたかったです！日本語を勉強する前に、アニメや漫画も見たことありませんでしたが、日本語に興味を持ったきっかけで（特に、有川浩の阪急電車）、もっと日本の本を読み、関西弁をはじめとする日本語の様々な特徴に惹かれました 。最近、江戸時代が舞台になっている「JIN-仁-」というテレビ番組にハマっているため、個人的な目的の一つは辞書を引かずに、理解できるようになりたいと思います。日本の一番好きなところについて聞かれたら、自然や人だと答えるかもしれません。

Actually, my reason for coming to Japan is a bit random. When I entered university, I chose to study Japanese because I had enjoyed learning Spanish in high school but had become bored of it. For my entire high school life before that, I had wanted to be a veterinarian! I had never really seen any anime, manga or listened to Japanese music before beginning to learn Japanese, but I absolutely fell in love with the language, which led me to read more Japanese books (a favourite is Hankyu Densha by Hiro Arikawa) and learn more about aspects of Japanese like Kansai-ben. Nowadays, I am also really obsessed with a TV show set in the Edo Period called "Jin", so one of my personal goals is to understand everything they're talking about without having to look up a word in the dictionary. If you asked me now what my favourite part of Japan is, I would probably say the nature or the people.

3.仕事について/ About Work

現在、愛媛県庁と愛媛県国際交流協会（EPIC）でCIRとして勤務しています。ほとんどの仕事は翻訳と通訳が中心ですが、茶道体験や大阪万博のような楽しいイベントに参加する機会もあります！アイルランドはまだ日本にてあまり知られていないらしいので、私の文化を日本の皆様に紹介できる機会をいただけるのは、光栄です。特に、アイルランドだけではなく、ヨーロッパ全体に関するイベントを主催したり、英語力を上達させる為に留学したい生徒をサポートしたりして、その他にもお役に立てることがあれば、ぜひ関わっていきたいです。

Currently, I work at the Ehime Prefectural Office and the Ehime Prefectural International Centre (EPIC) as a Coordinator for International Relations (CIR). My work mainly revolves around translating and interpreting from Japanese to English, but I often get fantastic opportunities like taking part in tea ceremonies and attending Osaka Expo! I also get the opportunity to show Irish culture to Japan, which is a great honour as so far it seems that Irish culture is fairly unknown to Japanese people. Not only that, I'd love to be able to show all the great cultures across Europe and support students who are looking to go abroad to improve their English.

4.愛媛の印象/Ehime's Impression

実は、留学生の時にロードトリップで松山市に訪れる機会があって、愛媛県について検索せずに来ましたので、最初の印象は「すごい、松山市に住んでいる人は蜜柑が大好きですね」。でも、今なら分かってきました！松山市を旅行したり、市民と話したり、愛媛県について学ぶ時間をとった後、歴史が深くて、美しい自然に恵まれているということを実感しました。たぶん一番印象に残っていることは皆様の親切さです！松山市に来て、最初の一週間で、銀天街に位置する喫茶店を見つけて、2時間にわたってアイルランドと日本についてマスターと話すことができました。そして、話すためにその喫茶店によく行っています。私の経験では、京都をはじめとする他の都市でそのような経験がなかったので、運が良かったと思います。

I actually had the opportunity to come to Matsuyama City on a road trip previously during my year abroad, and as I hadn't researched anything about Ehime beforehand I arrived and my first thought was "Wow these guys really like oranges". But I can understand why! After travelling around, speaking with the local people and taking the time to learn about Ehime, this is a place steeped in history and blessed with beautiful nature. Possibly my most striking impression though is how kind everyone is. In my first week in Matsuyama I found a nice coffee shop on the main street and was able to talk with the owner for two hours about life in Japan and Ireland. Now I regularly visit that coffee shop to talk with him. To me, these are experiences I never really got in the bigger cities like Kyoto and Osaka and so I consider myself incredibly lucky.

5.その他なんでも/ Other

将来、何を成功させたいかというと、自分のコミュニティーで具体的な変化をもたらしたいです。私がアイルランドで体験できなかったような様々なことを、年齢を問わず誰も体験できる機会を提供したいと思います。日本人が接する機会が少ないヨーロッパの文化を紹介するイベント企画したり、県内の図書館やハイキングコース、娯楽施設などの利用も促していきたいと思います！

When I think about what I want to achieve in the future, I often think about making tangible changes in my community and making sure there are opportunities for people of all ages to experience a wide variety of things that I couldn't in Ireland growing up. That's why I want to encourage more people to use the services around Ehime like the local libraries, hiking trails and recreational facilities whilst also organising cultural events, etc. with Europe as a focus in order to give Japanese people the opportunity to experience cultures which they may not come into contact with!
