The following is the abstract from the book entitled "Bushido (The soul of Japan)", which was authored by NITOBE Inazo in Meiji era. It represents the basic state of mind of Japanese people by quoting the Japanese traditions handed down over the years.
'The sakura has for ages been the favorite of our people and the emblem of our character.'
'Thr refinement and grace of its beauty appearl to our authentic sense as no other flowere can. We cannot share the admiration of the European for their roses, which lack the simplicity of our flower' 「桜の洗練された美しさと気品に、私たち日本人の美的感覚は刺激される。
'Then, too, the thorns that are hidden beneath the sweetness of the rose, the tenacity with which she clings to life, sa though loth or afraid to die rather than drop untimely, preferring to rot on her stem; her showy colours and heavy odours - all these are traits so unlike our flower, which carries no dagger or poison under its beauty, which is ever ready to depart life at the call of nature, whose cplours are never gorgeous, and whose light fragrance never palls.'
Do you agree or disagree with the idea shown above? Hope all of you will enjoy the Sakura season as the new gateway to a new fiscal year!!

2008/02/26 |

Hi,again
In western countries, there is a saying that "March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb." or "March comes in with adder heads, and goes out with peacock tails."
The sign of the spring is ahead of us, but the arrival of spring always brings an unexpected weather or incident because of strong winds.
I paid a visit to Hawaii two weeks ago. I could offer my sincere respects to the Ehime-maru Memorial along with Mr. Edwin Hawkins, President of Japan-America Society of Hawaii.
I also had the opportunity to meet with the interns who worked together at our center last summer. Shu and Eric are now in the final course in the graduate course of the UH. They will soon depart for pursuing their new career after graduation. Wish them luck.
Talking with people who knows Ehime and have shared good memories together always bring me to the nostalgic mode. This proves that I've got aged?? Anyhow, opening hearts and minds in friendship is the attitude that we canot miss whenever getting together with new people.
I sincerely hope EPIC will become a lively and fun place again this summer with the new interns. New interns will be arriving in EPIC mid-May.
■First Intern from the UH ; Do you remember Zac?
2008/02/26 |
|
Time passes quickly. One sinxth of a year has already passed before I mark the proactive footprints in 2008. Early this year the first intern from the UH, Zachary Bass, made a visit with us in Ehime. We truly enjoyed the reunion with him even though his visit was quite short this time. As he is well versed in Japanese language as well as in its culture, he is currently working as a coordinator for international relations (CIR) in Aomori prefectural office. He is excited about doing his job and also eager to make new friends there. We are very happy to know his experience at EPIC becomes a good help in conducting his current job.
As you know, when Ehime products like oranges and sea bream are shipped to the areas out of Ehime, they are sealed with a slogan,"愛媛産には、愛がある". Likewise, Aomori's slogan is "決め手は青森県産". He is now in need of translation of this slogan. The best idea he has come up with is "The key to winning is Made of Aomori." What do you think? Ehime and Aomori will compete with each other in gaining the consumer's reputation in agricultural and fishery products on sale!!
"The key to winning is Made of Aomori."
The following is the abstract from Zac's report on Ehime Internship Program(ザックのレポートからの一部抜粋);
The internship was a stimulating and positive experience for me. It allowed me to test and improve my skills of communication, teamwork, problem solving, creative thinking, and language ability. I was able to see my labors of studying Japanese for nearly eight years bear fruit as I made practical and effective use of the language in my work and daily life. I was learning more about Japan and myself as a person than I had ever done in my life.
About halfway through the internship program, my supervisor asked me if I had thought about participating in the JET program. Up until that point, I had thought that JET was only about being an ALT teaching English in Japanese schools. I explained that I thought it was not for me since I would not be able to fully use my Japanese abilities, efforts, and potential to my satisfaction unless I had a chance to interact and make a difference in the lives of people both Japanese and foreign in the community. I wanted to continue doing the work I was enjoying in the international center. My supervisor told me that what I wanted to do was work as a CIR.

■Christmas Greetings 2007 |

Dear Friends
At this special time of year we acknowledge people who occupy a special place in our hearts and endeavour to keep in touch with friends, colleagues and relatives. Many Christmas 2007 bring many good tidings to you and your family.
At EPIC young and energetic high school students occasionally get together and share a happy time together including EPIC staff. They are the good reminders for us to realize the following saying, "The more I learn, the more I realize I don’t know. The more I realize I don’t know, the more I want to learn". They will return to their home country respectively next January. I wish they will serve as a goodwill ambassador of Ehime to their countries.
The photos above shows the one day at EPIC. The couple from Switzerland who tried to bring back the cute puppy, which was abandoned by the roadside, ran into the high school students at EPIC. That day was coincidentally Mrs. Wanke's birthday. They sang the Happy Birthday song aloud. Mrs. Wanke will always remember the unexpected story that she had in Matsuyama. Mr. and Mrs. Wanke are now planning to visit Ehime again in order to study Japanese language.
Daily stories happening at EPIC generates the new friendship among the people. This is truly what we wish to produce through various activities.
As 2007 comes to a close the cold winds of winter are blowing warm wishes to you and your family to share a very special new year season and to hope that 2008 brings peace of mind and contentment to you.
Sincerely.
EPIC staff

■Ehime-Australia (Queensland) collaborative activities via Ehime cuisine!
2007/12/04 |
|
Hello, friends
Do you know Ehime and the State of Queensland in Australia had established the economic agreement about a decade ago. The exchange between the states has been conducted steadily since then. One of the visible output of this relationship was practiced last month in the city of Townsville, Queensland.
It was taken place as a part of the Japan Festival in there. Two experienced chefs from Ehime participated in this event not only for serving the dishes with great shakes for the local guests but for providing the local students who will engage in culinary services in the future with a good opportunity to learn how to cook and setout the Japanese dishes in a traditional style. They were serious about mastering the secret skills of the master chefs from Ehime.
At the luncheon and dinner tables, two chefs from Ehime accomodated two hundred guests along with the Ehime sake. All the guests thoroughly enjoyed the Japanese delicacy, and the hosting organization found no leftover remained on the tables.
Ehime products such as fresh fish, oranges and sake are now growing as the world famous brand!! |
